OIL & THE DOLLAR
The 2026 oil war ran the experiment everyone argues about, and we kept the tape. When the Hormuz blockade sent Brent up 63.3% (Feb 27 – Mar 31), the US dollar index moved +3% — and the classic petro-currencies got weaker, not stronger: USD/CAD +1.8%, USD/NOK +2.2%. In a real crisis, the risk-off bid for dollars beat the textbook petrodollar effect. Today DXY sits at 99.78 (2026-09-02), and its 2026 driver has been the Fed, not the barrel.
Why the textbook keeps being wrong
The standard story says oil up → oil exporters earn more → petro-currencies rally → the dollar softens. That chain works in calm markets and long horizons. In shocks, a different chain dominates: oil up on WAR → global risk-off → everyone buys dollars → the dollar rises with oil and the petro-currencies fall despite it. 2026 was the second chain, measured above from daily closes. Meanwhile the dollar's actual 13-month-high run this year tracked sticky US inflation and a hawkish Fed — a rates story that oil only enters through the inflation data, with a lag of months (the first full month of cheap crude reaches the July inflation prints).
Method
- Prints: ICE US Dollar Index and spot USD/CAD, USD/NOK, daily closes from our archived series; window moves are peak response inside the stated dates, close-to-close.
- Correlation, not causation: co-movement during a window is what happened, not proof of why. We say which chain the tape matched; we do not claim the tape can only mean one thing.
- The live coupling: the rolling 30-day coupling of the dollar (and everything else) to Brent runs on the Transmission board — free for subscribers.
FAQ
Does a weak dollar make oil go up? Oil is priced in dollars, so a weaker dollar mechanically supports dollar-priced commodities — a real but usually small effect versus supply and risk news, as this year demonstrated in both directions.
Which currencies actually track oil? Over months: CAD, NOK, and other exporter currencies show the classic link. Over crisis weeks: the dollar's safe-haven bid can swamp all of it — that is the 2026 lesson.
What should I watch instead of the petrodollar story? The July 14 CPI and the July 29 Fed meeting — the route by which this year's cheap oil actually reaches the dollar.
